Waconda Cultural Association

Specific Need

WCA is currently working on the Waconda Visitor and Education Center area of the Glen Elder State Park. On the large patio area, we have purchased large free-standing, portable shade canopies. With the over-sized metal arrow photo op, and the newest donation of a life-size metal art bison, we are expanding "Prairie Art" attractions in this area and around the State Park. Along with the art we are adding educational signage matching the historical topics at each location. Six smaller, colored, metal arrows have been installed in the park, creating an arrow scavenger hunt. The association is also saving funds to enhance the new 40 x 80 shelterhouse at Osage Camping area that will break ground later in 2026 to be completed in 2027. We have added a rock driveway to the Replica Pool area, and a new playground at Cheyenne Campground. Improving the amphitheatre in the western end of the park, adding more art to the park and relocating the laundry area for campers in 2026 are current goals.

Mission

The Mission of Waconda Cultural Association is to preserve history and educate the public on Waconda Springs, its Native American heritage, the building of Waconda Lake and Dam, and the geological layout of the land and related issues.

Profile

Waconda Cultural Association is a service organization for the benefit of the Glen Elder State Park, with a focus on education and preservation of the Waconda Mineral Springs history. WCA has restored the Waconda Springs Replica pool and walking museum and repurposed a visitor center into a mini-museum for Waconda Springs items and education. WCA sponsors historical events and assists the Park in hosting the Ghostly Storytelling night with legends of the Solomon River Valley and the Springs. An annual fundraiser, Lakefest, is held with the annual Fireworks Display in July. WCA members started a cultural art project in the Park with a 35 foot metal arrow next to the Waconda Visitor and Education building. A full-sized metal art bison has been donated as a memorial and will become part of the park by summer, 2025. More projects are planned to expand the Native American and prairie history of the Waconda Lake area.
